Seán Aylward is the Secretary General of Ireland’s Department of Justice and Equality and is charged with the department’s day-to-day management and with its strategic planning and direction. Prior to his appointment as Secretary General in 2004, Aylward served as Director General of the Irish Prison Service.
He began his career in the Department of Defense and went on to work as Private Secretary to the Taoiseach. He later worked in the Department of Industry and Commerce before joining the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform.
Aylward holds a M.Sc. in management from Trinity College in Dublin. He is currently researching a Ph.D. in governance with the Institute of Governance, Queen's University, Belfast; and the Institute of Public Administration, Dublin.
